Stylianos Ou & The Cortisol Cows are one of the most distinctive acts to emerge from the contemporary independent scene of Athens, moving between indie folk, americana, and alt-country, while drawing on lo-fi and garage aesthetics. The project was founded by Stelios Papagrigoriou, an artist active across music, literature, and visual arts, who has developed a constantly shifting artistic identity through various projects, from art-punk bands such as Hand & Leg and experimental electronics as Stylianos Ou, to the contemporary singer-songwriter form of the Cortisol Cows.
The band functions as a collective of musicians from the Athenian scene, with a core lineup consisting of Stelios Papagrigoriou on guitar and vocals, Marilou Theologiti on cello and keyboards, Tolis Metzidakis on bass, Panos Liapis on guitar, and Myrsini Vestaki on violin and drums, alongside contributions on banjo and guitar by Kimon Vlachakis and Giotis Paraskevaidis. Their sound is marked by an “electrified lyricism,” where folk storytelling meets literary irony and existential commentary, with lyrics that move between tenderness and cynicism, capturing the contradictions of contemporary life.
Their debut album, “Fucked Forever” (2024, Ever/Never Records), introduced a multilayered sonic universe in which banjo, cello, and electric guitars coexist within a deeply narrative-driven songwriting approach. Thematically, the album operates as a chronicle of contemporary disintegration, combining black humor with fragile sensitivity, with references ranging from literature to pop culture.
Their second album, “Rotten”, will be released in spring 2026 via Inner Ear.
